sir,
I have the honour to report that on the 6th. instant General Luk Wing Ting, Military Governor of Canton arrived in Hongkong on his way to Peking and took the opportunity of return- -ing the call I had made on him in Canton on the 16th. February as reported in my Despatch No. 60 of the 20th. February, 1917. General Lak was received with a Guard of Honour and I entertained him and
his suite at luncheon.
In the course of conversation the General
informed me that he had brought some presents for me which he would cause to be delivered during the afternoon. While thanking the General for his kind intentions I informed him that I was forbidden by the regulations from accepting presents but he explained that they were merely small tekens of his good feelings and moreover that he had had an embroidered screen specially inscribed with my name
in Chinese characters.
Later in the afternoon the presents consisting
of the embroidered screen above mentioned, half a dozen embroidered pictures and two large vases arrived. As it would undoubtedly have given offence to return all these presents, and as the vases are of practically no commercial value and as the screen, as mentioned
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
